I’m writing this short note to those of you who have written me about my old book Pagan Christianity, a book I wrote MANY years ago with George Barna (it released way back in January 2008).
I’ve written over 12 books since then – many of which I regard to be FAR more important.
For whatever reasons, people who email me about the “little old red book” don’t seem to be aware of my newer books, some of which have been bestsellers.
This mystifies me. I can only conclude that (1) they never got on the Thursday email list and (2) if they are my Facebook friends, they never see my updates (3) they don’t listen to any of my podcasts.
Strange, yes. But it is what it is.
Here’s what you need to know about Pagan Christianity.
- It’s NOT a stand alone. It’s part only the first volume in a series – the constructive follow ups can be found on my books page. I’ll list the sequels in a minute.
- It was NOT written for pastors or people content with the institutional form of church. It was written to and for people who left the institutional form of church and desire to meet under the authority of Christ according to New Testament principles, and they want confirmation on what they were thinking and feeling. The books were written to give these individuals green light permission that their feelings are historically and biblically justified. But it only deconstructs. Nothing more. The sequels construct.
- Also, those old books on radical ecclesiology DO NOT advocate “house church” or “simple church.” I’ve gone on record saying that I wouldn’t give 2 cents for most house churches today. They are not organic and Jesus Christ is not central nor supreme. My books advocate “the organic expression of the church,” which is much different. True organic churches may or may not gather in a home. The location isn’t what’s important or what defines it.

- Insurgence can be added to that list (2018), which is one of my most important books.
- The above books are radical and they don’t align with most modern “house church” or “simple church” circles.
- They are also for people who HAVE LEFT the organized church. If you haven’t left institutional church and desire to meet organically under the headship of Christ, those four old books on ecclesiology weren’t written for you. You’ll want to read my other books, especially those listed above. The exception is From Eternity to Here. That’s for ALL believers even though it’s part of my radical church series.
- Keep in mind that the days in which TRUE organic church life was popular and people below the age of 60 were interested in it are over for now (as of 2025). There is little interest in the subject in that age group presently. Instead, the interest is in the kingdom of God and spiritual transformation which is what my books from 2010 to the present day have been focused on, by the Lord’s leading.
