Accusations

The high-voltage political season in the US has got me thinking about smearfests. Jesus of Nazareth was no politician. Yet He was subject to a continuous stream of smears. Here are 11 accusations that were laid at our Lord’s feet during His day:

He was an illegitimate child, a drunkard, a glutton, a false prophet, a deceiver, a blasphemer, mentally ill, demon possessed, a law-breaker [“unbiblical”], Beelzebub [Satan incarnate], and a temple-destroyer.

Strikingly, the Lord never defended Himself against any of these allegations. That’s just how divine life rolls.

Those of you who have given — or will give — your life utterly to the Lord may see God using you powerfully. If and when that happens (or if it’s already happening), take heed. False accusations are not far away. Stirring up the kingdom of darkness will bring them to your door. The enemy’s name is “slanderer” and “accusing the brethren” is his most effective weapon.

So don’t be surprised when you see mud slung your way. It was so then, and it is so today. But discover the uncommon secret of how to react to the accusations as did your Lord (1 Peter 2:21-23; Matthew 26:57-63). It’s profoundly different from the way virtually all politicians — and many Christians — react.
