Will the Revolution Be Televised?
Gil Scott-Heron insisted the revolution would not be televised. When it comes to what God is doing in His people today, he was right, but not for the reasons he imagined.
A revolution is underway in the body of Christ, and it will not be broadcast on cable networks or trending on the platforms that reward outrage. It is quieter than that, and far more subversive. Its banner is the gospel Jesus Himself preached: the gospel of the kingdom.
For too long, the message announced from pulpits has been a truncated one—a gospel of sin management, of getting individuals into heaven, of personal fire insurance. But the gospel Jesus proclaimed was the arrival of a King and His reign. “The kingdom of God is at hand” was not an invitation to a private transaction. It was the announcement of an invasion.
This is the heart of what I’ve called the Insurgence—the recovery of the radical, all-consuming gospel of the kingdom that first-century believers gave their lives for. The King has come. He is Lord not merely of the human heart but of the cosmos. And He is assembling a colony of the future in the present.
The revolution isn’t about better programs or louder branding. It’s about allegiance. It’s about a people who have relocated their citizenship, who no longer live for the empires of this age but for the ekklesia—the called-out community that embodies the reign of Christ on earth.
No, the revolution will not be televised. It rarely is. God has always done His deepest work outside the spotlight, in the hidden places, among the nobodys He delights to use.
