In Praise of New Songs

“Sing to the Lord a new song.”

~ Psalm 98:1

I had the privilege of spending the last two weekends with a beautiful fellowship of believers.

This group of Jesus-followers has written some of their own songs, songs that reflect their life and experience in Christ.

Recently, the fellowship wrote a simple song to an old obscure tune.

The song is entitled: SINCE WE’VE TASTED AND WE’VE SEEN

“Taste and see that the Lord is good.” (Psalm 34:8)

“We have tasted the goodness of the Word of God and the powers of the coming age.” (Heb. 6:5)

“But we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.” (Acts 4:20)

I love the song, and can’t get it out of my head.

I’m posting a recording of it so you can hear it.

The fellowship sang it in several different ways, so listen to the whole recording.

Note that I placed a digital recorder on the floor, so don’t expect professional quality.

Surgeon General’s Warning: If you choose to listen to this recording, there’s an excellent chance that it will be burned into the circuitry of your brain forevah and evah world without end.

Click here to listen to the song

Here are the lyrics:

You’ve electrified our lives today

You’ve electrified our lives today

We’ve seen Your grace work in mysterious ways

Oh, Your grace works in mysterious ways

And we’ve tasted, yeah, we’ve tasted

Oh, since we’ve tasted and we’ve seen, we’ll sing!

(Repeat)

Sin was in our skin and now we’re clean

Sin was in our skin and now we’re clean

And You’ve revealed to us Your mystery

You’ve revealed to us Your mystery

Lord, You’re in us, and we’re in You

Oh, since we’ve tasted and we’ve seen, we’ll sing!

(Repeat)

As Your bride we’ll only love you more

Every day we’ll wake and love you more

Cause in You, we’re rich while we’re still poor

Cause in You, we’re rich while we’re still poor

You’re our food, and our shelter

Oh, since we’ve tasted and we’ve seen, we’ll sing!

(Repeat)

Would you consider hearing a Spanish translation of your song?

      Certainly.

Been thinking about Christian music for a while. Why do you think there is so much more talented music that is “non religious” in nature? And how come churches (low case “c”)refuse to sing “worldly” songs when they can be just as beautiful and so full of Spirit? For some reason it seems that a lot of Christian music (the above song excluded, I like that one alot) is lazy – meaning, 4 chords and a few rhyming lines can’t pass for art if you stick the word “God” or “Lord” here and there. Seems that believers even more than unbelievers should long for the real art (and hence the experience of God’s touch) and discern between something we want to sing vs something we think we should sing.

Thanks for posting this song. You can just feel that those who are singing are not just uttering the words but that the song is flowing from them. Like real art.

    Frank,

The chords and melody for this song are from a Christian song written by Graham Kendrick. The name of the song is “We Are Marching in the Light of God.” I was a part of the March for Jesus in the 1990’s and we sang this song as we marched through the streets of Dallas. The chords for the song are available on the internet. Just search for “Marching in the Light of God” and Graham Kendrick.

Thanks, Bill. I just heard 3 different versions of Kendrick’s song and they all sound different to me than the posted song. Similar in some ways, but still quite different. I think it would be more accurate to say that the music was inspired by Kendrick. The person who wrote the song said the music was influenced by a tune his mother used to sing to him. Either way, this fellowship’s version is contagious. Kendrick had some good stuff back then fo sho.

It reminds me of tribal songs I heard in Kenya. Raw, undiluted, indigenous to the tribe’s life together. Here’s to the new tribe of Christ!

What a living revelation of Christ these brothers and sisters have. They really have tasted and seen!

Thanks for sharing brother this has been such an encouragement this week.

May we love Him more everyday.

Was so refreshing to hear how much they were enjoying the Lord while singing it, too. Made my day!

What a powerful song!!! You can hear the joy in the group come through too. The tune sounds similar to another song I’ve heard before but I think what they did with it is much better than the original. The lyrics are awesome. thanks for sharing this with us.

Refreshingly simple yet profound! Reminiscent of the Jesus Movement choruses in the late 60s. Holy Spirit does it again!

    I really enjoyed that song!

Every now and again an older song will take on a new meaning or significance from a different perspective but new songs are wonderful.

Thanks for sharing and for allowing us to be able to listen how others Jesus-centered fellowships are worshipping. I love how God is pouring new songs into His Bride. We too, have had a few new ones written by someone in our church fellowship.

Just thought I’d let you know that your reader count will probably double in size with the posting of this new song brother!

    😉

Well . . . that would be awesome. But it will be difficult to top the reader reviews for my interview with N.T. Wright, Beyond Evangelical: Part II and Part IV, God’s View of a Woman, and my Rob Bell post.

      But we’ll see.

It all depends on how many readers “Tweet” and “Like/Share” the post. Actually, if someone “Stumbles” it using StumbleUpon, that could push it over the edge also.

Love you too! Christ is ALL. Psalm 115:1

I’m just “doing unto others” . . . 🙂 Glad it cured you from a Madonna song. She can’t touch this.
